2024 Luna Lab Festival

Announcing the next annual Luna Lab Festival! The 2024 Festival will be held from June 17-22 in San Francisco, California.

The 2023–24 fellowsMaria Emiliano, Ilaria Hawley, Haeon Lee, Peyton Nelesen, Marvel Roth, and Hannah Wolkowitz—will travel to San Francisco to participate in six days of workshops, master classes, networking events, performances, and more.

We’re thrilled to cap off our eighth season with our first West-Coast festival in partnership with the trailblazing Kronos Quartet. We both know the life-changing power that even one professional performance can have for an emerging composer, and are honored that our fellows’ works will be performed by Kronos Quartet as part of their 50th Anniversary Celebration.

This festival is the culmination of a year of milestones for Luna Composition Lab; eleven of our alums started college this year, majoring in composition at Harvard, Northwestern, Columbia, Mannes, and many more, we’ve started a two year partnership with ChamberQUEER, sponsored by the New York Community Trust, and we’ve hosted masterclasses with Jeanine Tesori, Fay Victor, Jeffrey Zeigler, and Aviva Jaye. We can’t wait to present works by another class of Luna Lab Fellows with you, and we thank you for your support. –Missy Mazzoli and Ellen Reid

This year’s events include workshops with Luna Lab mentors Veronika Krausas, Angélica Negròn, Dawn Norfleet; a masterclass with composer Erika Oba, a panel discussion with Kronos commissioned composers, trips to celebrated venues, collaborative participation in rehearsals, networking events for young composers, and more.

A free Spotlight Lab will feature an in-depth conversation on the collaboration with Kronos Quartet with Luna Lab Artistic Directors Missy Mazzoli, Ellen Reid, and others.

The festival culminates in three performances at SFJAZZ Center by our Ensemble-in-Residence: Kronos Quartet. As part of their Kronos Festival, the quartet will perform world premieres by the 2023–24 fellows. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Kronos and to be part of their Five Decades celebration.
